PART I
Originally entitled
'Dead Souls', Gogol was obliged to rename it "Tchitchikoff's
Journeys" by the Petersburg Censors, after being turned
down by the Moscow Censors on the grounds that it showed "Gogol
was taking up arms against Immortality".
